IF YOU THINK YOU CAN

Our Vision Our young people are supported to be the very best they can be and helping them reach their full potential
Our Mission Ucan centre strives to build strong independent young people through vocational education with wrap-around support, leaving no young person behind
Our Promise Ucan promises to provide opportunities that change lives through the impact of alternative learning identifying young peoples strengths and building on them
Alternative Provision
The purpose of Alternative Provision is to provide an education for young people who fall into one of the following categories:
-
Not managing with full-time mainstream education
-
At the risk of permanent exclusion
-
Wishing to specialise in a discrete vocational area
-
Those needing a short break from school – Step Out
-
Those that have a fixed term exclusion lasting more than 5 days
-
preparation for year 11 Early College Transfer (ECT)
For some young people, a full-time mainstream education programme just does not work for them, they are constantly disruptive around the school, hard to get into school and remain there or simply point-blank refuse to go. Leaving school seems such a long way off to many of them, they have no career focus, and they feel they have all the time in the world and just don’t see the relevance of why they need to gain their GCSE’s. This is where for many, Alternative Provision can help. We develop a more personalised learning programme, linked into vocational options. It is hoped that this will meet the needs and interests of individual young person and give them a chance to re-engage into education
Another reason a young person may be referred to Alternative Provision is that it is felt that they are at risk of permanent exclusion This decision is never taken lightly by any Academy/Schools and they will try several different interventions including Alternative Provision to stop this happening. By placing a child into a different provision, we are encouraging inclusion in education and giving the young person a chance to turn things around.
Some young people only require alternative provision for a short period of time, or in order to complete a specific program to support them in making the right choices where others may stay longer, and Alternative Provision part time is seen as a means to keep a young person engaged and focused on their GCSE lessons in school.
All young people are different with different needs that's why at The UCAN Centre we work with classes of no more than 6/8 so we can tailor the program and offer the wrap-around support each young person needs.

UCAN does not employ teachers but use tutors from industry who are currently employed and can mentor and support young people in understanding the real facts about their industry. We find that by using employee they can talk “real life” to a young person encouraging them to see relevance of gaining GCSE’s and they are seen as “credible” by the young person as they already work in the industry.
We encourage parents to visit their young person at any time and join in with any vocational lesson, you may have a project you want to complete with your young person yourself
Child Safety
All staff at the UCAN Centre take the safety of your young person very seriously, once in the centre there are procedures in place to ensure they cannot leave without being let out by a member of staff. No child will be permitted to leave the centre without the permission of their parent/carer and Academy/School.

Support Services
The UCAN service works closely with the support services attached to any young person, we know we are only part of the solution and other agencies may also need to be involved. this also permits us to work closely with those young people who may have an Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP) in place. The centre has a small private room that can be used for 1;1 meetings.
Tutors
All Tutors are qualified in the specific vocational areas they deliver, have a passion about seeing young people succeed, and have full enhanced DBS in place. Tutors provide feedback after each session to the centre manager where needed, also in the end of term review that goes to school. Parents/carers are encouraged to ask to see this
COVID 19
All classrooms are set up with social distancing in place on entering the premises hand sanitiser is available to be used. We operate a one-way system around the centre to ensure social distancing can be adhered to with separate entry and exits doors. Where social distancing cannot be obtained masked must be worn and are be available onsite.
New for 2022 – For every new young person referred to UCAN for 2 days or more, UCAN will sponsor a Centre Point room
